“Performing artists are storytellers who make people’s lives seen on screen and on stage as a representation of them, and that’s what keeps me in it. I’ve always wanted to see someone who looks like me do the things that I like. Through my work, I can influence other people and keep representation going.”

John Clay III graduated CMU in 2017 with a degree in Musical Theatre, where he led their production of Ragtime as Coalhouse Walker Jr. He is currently understudying the role whilst starring as Booker T. Washington in the currently Broadway Revival. Clay earned an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination for his performance as Anthony Justin “AJ” James in Choir Boy, and he later starred as Jesse Webb in the musical New York, New York. Other Credits include Jelly’s Last Jam and Grand Hotel for the New York City Center Encores!, and a Raisin in the Sun at The Public. Television includes “Raising Kanan,” and PBS’ “Great Performances”.
